More Animals Need Help.

If it feels like animal welfare has been facing challenge after challenge in recent years, you're not imagining it.

Across the country, shelters and rescues continue to navigate a difficult landscape shaped by economic uncertainty, rising veterinary costs, housing instability, staffing shortages, and a continued shortage of foster homes. While national adoption numbers have shown modest improvement, many shelters remain overcrowded and under-resourced, struggling to keep up with the steady stream of animals arriving at their doors.

According to the latest national data from Shelter Animals Count, approximately 5.8 million dogs and cats entered shelters and rescues across the United States in 2025. More than 4.2 million animals found homes through adoption, a slight increase from the previous year, and nearly 600,000 fewer animals were euthanized than just a few years ago. These are encouraging signs, but behind those numbers is a sheltering system still operating under tremendous pressure.

For us at Operation Paws for Homes, these challenges aren't reflected only in national reports—we see them every day in the emails, phone calls, and urgent messages we receive from our partners, and shelters across the country, asking for help. Recently, one of our shelter partners in Russell County, VA, faced an impossible situation. With kennels full and no available options, the shelter was preparing to euthanize 10 dogs simply because they had run out of space. Thanks to the support of OPH fosters, volunteers, donors, and rescue partners, nine of those dogs were given a second chance.

Unfortunately, situations like this are becoming increasingly common.

Throughout the southeast and beyond, shelters continue to operate beyond capacity, and many depend on organizations like OPH when resources are exhausted. Whether it's a litter of puppies, a senior pet, a medical case, or a shelter facing a space emergency, our partners know they can reach out to OPH when animals have nowhere else to turn.

At the same time, our cat program is growing rapidly. This spring, we have welcomed an increasing number of vulnerable kittens into our care, including bottle babies, orphaned litters, nursing mothers, and kittens requiring specialized medical treatment. As kitten season reaches its peak, the need for foster homes, supplies, and financial support continues to grow.

While rescue remains at the heart of our mission, we also know that lasting change requires prevention.

Through our Community Paws Coalition initiative in Alleghany County, Virginia, we recently completed our first trap-neuter-vaccinate-return (TNVR) event for community cats. We continue to invest in community spay and neuter programs, support underserved shelters, and expand outreach efforts that help keep pets healthy, housed, and out of shelters in the first place. By addressing the root causes of pet overpopulation and owner surrender, we can reduce the number of animals needing rescue in the future.

But none of this happens without the support of our community.

Every adoption creates space for another animal in need.

Every foster home saves lives.

Every volunteer helps us expand our impact.

Every donation provides food, medical care, transportation, and lifesaving support for animals with nowhere else to turn.

To continue meeting the increased needs of our shelter partners, we need your help.

If you've ever considered fostering, now is the time. Whether you can foster a playful puppy, a senior dog, a nursing mom, or a litter of kittens, opening your home for even a few weeks can make an extraordinary difference.

If you have time to give, we need volunteers to help with transports, events, administrative support, fundraising, and community outreach.

And if you're unable to volunteer or foster, a financial contribution of any size helps us say "yes" when a shelter calls with an urgent need.

The challenges facing animal welfare today are significant, but so is the power of the OPH community.

Because of supporters like you, dogs in an overcrowded shelter received a second chance.

Because of supporters like you, vulnerable kittens are receiving the care they need to survive.

Because of supporters like you, shelters facing impossible decisions know they have a partner they can call.

Together, we can save lives today while building a future where fewer animals need rescue tomorrow.

Thank you for being part of the OPH family!
