We’re Halfway There and What a Difference You’ve Made!
Celebrating the First Six Months of 2026
We've passed the halfway point of 2026, we're taking a moment to reflect on what we've accomplished together, and to thank the incredible community that made it all possible.
Every donation, every foster home, every volunteer hour, every adoption, every transport, every supply drive, and every act of kindness has helped change lives. Whether you've supported OPH through a financial gift, opened your home to an animal in need, attended an event, shared our mission, or cheered us on from afar, you are part of every life we've saved. Because of you, hundreds of animals who once faced uncertain futures are now safe, loved, and home.
Mid-Year By the Numbers
951 Animals Welcomed into OPH Care
• 687 Dogs (an 84.7% increase from 2025)
• 264 Cats (a 73.7% increase from 2025)
899 Adoptions
• 738 Dogs (an 88.7% increase from 2025)
• 161 Cats (a 22% increase from 2025)
Behind every number is a story.
A litter of puppies rescued from an overcrowded rural shelter. A frightened mama cat protecting her kittens. A senior dog receiving desperately needed medical care. A beloved family pet whose owner had nowhere else to turn.
Today, each of these animals has hope, and a future, because of compassionate people like you.
Building Lifesaving Partnerships
Saving lives doesn't happen alone. This year, OPH continued strengthening partnerships with shelters and communities that need us most.
During the first six months of 2026:
619 dogs and 247 cats entered OPH through 20 trusted shelter partners.
408 dogs and 6 cats came from out-of-state shelter partners where overcrowding continues to threaten lives.
211 dogs and 241 cats were transferred from Virginia shelters, helping improve outcomes for animals closer to home.
We also welcomed 53 lifesaving transports, bringing 407 dogs and 6 cats safely to OPH foster homes through our transport partner, SaveDog Project, a 44.8% increase over last year.
Each transport represents far more than miles traveled. It creates space for another animal to be rescued, strengthens struggling shelters, and demonstrates what's possible when organizations work together.
Creating Lasting Change
While rescue remains at the heart of our mission, OPH continues investing in long-term solutions that address the root causes of animal homelessness.
Through our Community Paws Coalition, we're building sustainable partnerships in underserved Alleghany County, Virginia. Together with Alleghany Humane Society and local Animal Control Officers, we're providing resources that help keep pets with the families who love them while improving outcomes for animals across the community. Since launching our targeted Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) initiative in May, we've provided services for 71 community cats, preventing countless future litters and improving the health of local cat colonies.
Our community spay/neuter program has also invested over $14,000 to provide affordable or free surgeries for 253 pets across our partner communities, reducing shelter intake before it begins. These programs are changing lives today while creating healthier, more compassionate communities for years to come.
Bringing Smiles While Saving Lives
One of the most joyful parts of OPH continues to be our Puptastic Parties.
During the first half of 2026, our puppies—and even a few kittens—visited businesses, schools, and community events, bringing smiles to hundreds of people while helping socialize young animals preparing for adoption. In just six months:
36 Puptastic Parties
More than $20,700 raised
Hundreds of people introduced to OPH's mission
These events not only provide critical funding—they create new supporters, future adopters, and lifelong advocates for rescue animals.
Your Support Changes Everything
Every success we've celebrated has one thing in common: you. Whether you have:
Made a financial contribution
Fostered an animal
Adopted a new family member
Sponsored medical care
Volunteered your time
Donated supplies
Attended an event
Shared our mission with friends and family
...you have made a meaningful difference.
Your generosity provides lifesaving medical care. It fills food bowls. It fuels transports. It supports families in crisis. It helps shelters say "yes" to one more animal. And, most importantly, it gives homeless pets the chance to experience love again.
Simply put, none of this happens without you.
Looking Ahead
As proud as we are of what we've accomplished together, the need continues to grow. Shelters across the country remain overwhelmed. Kitten season is in full swing. Medical cases continue arriving. More foster homes are needed every week, and communities continue looking to OPH for support.
The second half of 2026 will bring new challenges, but also new opportunities to save even more lives.
With your continued generosity, compassion, and belief in our mission, we're ready. The strength of Operation Paws for Homes has never been measured by the number of animals we rescue alone. It is measured by the incredible community that stands behind every rescue, every adoption, and every second chance.
Because of you, 951 animals have already been given a new beginning this year.
Together, we're not just saving lives, we're transforming communities, strengthening partnerships, and creating a brighter future for animals who need us most.
Thank you for believing in this mission.
Here's to an incredible second half of 2026, to celebrating 16 years of lifesaving, and to every wagging tail, happy purr, and loving family still waiting to become part of the OPH story.
Thanks,
Rebecca
